OPERATIONAL MANAGER AT THE CENTER FOR RESEARCH AND RESTORATION OF MARINE ORGANISMS (CIROM IN SPANISH)

The Operational Manager (OM) will oversee the overall operation of the Institute for Socio- Ecological Research’s (ISER Caribe’s) Center for Research and Restoration of Marine Organism (CIROM in Spanish) facility in La Parguera, Puerto Rico. The OM will manage the daily operations of CIROM La Parguera to ensure that all goals and deliverables are being met, and CIROM is running smoothly and efficiently. This will include managing all staff, setting discreate goals and deliverables, and ensuring aquaculture systems and programs are running smoothly. The OM will work closely with the Executive Director, Project Manager, Herbivore, Coral and Life Support Managers and Staff Biologists to ensure CIROM is running smoothly, and all goals and deliverables are met.

ABOUT ISER CARIBE

ISER Caribe is a non-profit organization that develops and applies innovative research on ecological restoration of coral reefs, potable water, and climate change science. ISER Caribe promotes healthy and sustainable ecosystems and livelihoods through working towards the preservation of the environment and the empowerment of the local people. ISER Caribe is committed to working directly with local communities and is committed to hiring a diverse workforce that reflects the communities in which we work.

Our team studies the interactions between the environment and humans in order to develop alternate ways of managing anthropogenic and natural systems. Through our collaborative projects we build consensus that allow us to develop participatory actions, capacity building and horizontal knowledge transfer through local science, outreach activities, and education.

 

ABOUT CIROM

ISER developed CIROM, which has the first land-based coral and sea urchin nurseries in Puerto Rico. The overall goal of CIROM is to restore coral reef ecosystems through outplanting the organisms raised at CIROM to coral reefs to restore ecosystem balance, function and health. CIROM has two facilities, one in Ceiba and the other in La Parguera at the Department of Marine Science at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez.

 

REQUIREMENTS

We are seeking a highly organized and motivated individual who can maintain a positive, enthusiastic attitude to join our team. Key competencies include managerial and intrapersonal skills, and a basic understanding of aquaculture and marine science and/or conservation. The successful candidate must be able to work flexible hours and participate in an on-call and evening and weekend schedule. This position includes working outside in wet/humid and hot environments during all seasons and environmental conditions. Some travel throughout Puerto Rico and heavy lifting (over 50 lbs) will also be required.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's or master’s degree in biological sciences or a related

field, basic aquaculture experience, managerial experience, and the ability to work independently.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Oversee all operations at CIROM La Parguera, this includes the herbivore, algae, and coral cultivation programs, and the life support systems

  • Set intermediate and long-term goals to accomplish project deliverables

  • Organize all daily operations, this includes scheduling staff, and organizing staff and

    priorities to ensure project deliverables are being met

  • Develop and implement maintenance protocols, schedules, and procedures for all

    programs

  • Perform regular inspections, testing, and troubleshooting of equipment and supplies at

    CIROM La Parguera

  • Coordinate with established external partners, including scheduling meetings and

    assisting with travel for external partners

  • Act as a liaison to the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez and Department of Marine

    Science

  • Coordinate with program managers for repairs, upgrades, and equipment installations

  • Manage procurement and purchasing, including requesting quotes and ensuring internal

    and external protocols are being implemented

  • Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and integrity of all nurseries, including the larval

    rearing systems and microalgal cultivation

  • Provide training and guidance to program managers and staff on all programs and

    systems

  • Ensure all data is being properly recorded and are in compliance with internal and

    external good data practices

  • Ensure all operation follow safe practices and are in compliance with internal and

    external protocols

  • Manage health and safety compliance at CIROM La Parguera

  • Manage emergency plans and operations at CIROM La Parguera

  • Assist in developing and managing the budget

  • Ensure all inventory is maintained and programs have supplies and resourced needed to

    succeed

  • Assist with creating and maintaining collaborations with external partners

  • Assist with fundraising and grants

     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as biology, marine science, or environmental science

  • Proven experience managing teams

  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills

  • Strong organizational and time management abilities

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively

    with a diverse team

  • Ability to effectively follow and give directions

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities

  • Willing to work weekends and odd hours

  • Willing to be outdoors, work in inclement weather and rough terrain

  • Be physically able to push, pull, and lift to 50 pounds

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable means of transportation

     

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A relevant certification (e.g., Certified Aquatic Facility Operator)

  • Knowledge of the biology, physiology and aquaculture of corals, sea urchins, and crabs

  • Knowledge of aquaculture life support systems

  • At least 6 months of experience working with land-based nurseries or closed systems

  • At least 6 month of experience managing teams

  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English and Spanish

  • Knowledge of applicable environmental regulations and standards

  • Knowledge of Caribbean coral reef ecology and/or biology

     

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Only applications that are currently able to work in the United States will be considered

  • CIROM La Parguera is located at the Marine Science Department at the University of

    Puerto Rico

  • This position is for a limited term of 3 years with the possibility to extend based on

    funding

  • Approximately 40 hours of work per week will be required, but hours may vary based on

    need

  • Pay will be $65,000 annually, with a benefits package including paid time off (sick and

    vacation), workers’ compensation, and unemployment benefits.

El gerente de operaciones supervisará la operación general de las instalaciones del Centro de Investigación y Restauración de Organismos Marinos (CIROM) del Institute of Socio-Ecological Research (ISER Caribe) en La Parguera, Puerto Rico. El gerente de operaciones supervisará las operaciones diarias de CIROM La Parguera para garantizar que se cumplan todos los objetivos y metas, mientras se asegura de que CIROM funcione sin problemas y de manera eficiente. Esto incluirá la supervisión de todo el personal, el establecimiento de objetivos y resultados, a la vez que promueve el funcionamiento correcto de los sistemas y programas de acuicultura. El gerente de operaciones trabajará en estrecha colaboración con el Director Ejecutivo, el Gerente de Proyecto, los Gerentes de Herbívoros, Corales, Soporte Vital y los biólogos para garantizar un funcionamiento eficiente que vaya dirigido a cumplir con los resultados y metas establecidos para CIROM.

ACERCA DE CIROM

ISER Caribe desarrolló CIROM, el primer vivero terrestre de corales y erizos de mar en Puerto Rico. El objetivo general de CIROM es restaurar los ecosistemas de arrecifes de coral mediante la plantación de organismos criados en CIROM en arrecifes de coral para restaurar el equilibrio, el funcionamiento y la salud de los ecosistemas. CIROM cuenta con dos facilidades, una en Ceiba y la otra en La Parguera en el Departamento de Ciencias Marinas de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Mayagüez.

 

REQUISITOS

Estamos buscando personas altamente motivadas y organizadas, quienes mantengan una actitud positiva y entusiasta para unirse a nuestro equipo. Las competencias clave incluyen habilidades gerenciales e intrapersonales, y una comprensión básica de la acuicultura y las

ciencias marinas y/o la conservación. El candidato seleccionado debe poder trabajar en horarios flexibles y participar en un horario de guardia, nocturno y de fin de semana. Debe estar dispuesto a trabajar en el exterior en un ambiente de condiciones extremas (húmedo y caluroso) y en las diferentes temporadas y condiciones climáticas. También se requerirá que pueda manipular/mover equipos y/o materiales pesados (más de 50 libras).

El candidato ideal debe tener bachillerato o maestría en ciencias biológicas, o algún campo relacionado, experiencia básica de acuicultura, y la capacidad de trabajar independientemente.

 

RESPONSABILIDADES

  • Supervisar todas las operaciones en CIROM La Parguera, esto incluye los programas de cultivo de herbívoros, algas y corales, y los sistemas de soporte vital.

  • Establecer objetivos a mediano y largo plazo para lograr los objetivos del proyecto.

  • Organizar todas las operaciones diarias, esto incluye la programación y organización del

    personal y prioridades para garantizar que se cumplan los objetivos del proyecto.

  • Desarrollar e implementar protocolos, cronogramas y procedimientos de mantenimiento

    para todos los programas.

  • Realizar inspecciones periódicas, pruebas y resolución de problemas de equipos y

    suministros en CIROM La Parguera.

  • Coordinar con socios externos establecidos; esto incluye la programación de reuniones

    y la asistencia con viajes para socios externos.

  • Actuar como enlace con la Universidad de Puerto Rico Mayagüez y el Departamento de

    Ciencias Marinas

  • Coordinar con los gerentes de programas las reparaciones, actualizaciones e

    instalaciones de equipos.

  • Gestionar las adquisiciones, incluyendo la solicitud de cotizaciones mientras se asegura

    de que se estén implementando los protocolos internos y externos necesarios.

  • Monitorear y mantener la limpieza e integridad de todos los viveros, incluidos los

    sistemas de cría de larvas y el cultivo de microalgas.

  • Proporcionar capacitación y orientación a los gerentes de programas y al personal sobre

    todos los programas y sistemas.

  • Garantizar que todos los datos se registren correctamente y conforme a las prácticas

    establecidas para la recopilación de datos internos y externos.

  • Garantizar que todas las operaciones sigan prácticas seguras y cumplan con los

    protocolos internos y externos.

  • Gestionar el cumplimiento de seguridad y salud en CIROM La Parguera

  • Gestionar planes y operaciones de emergencia en CIROM La Parguera

  • Ayudar a desarrollar y manejar presupuestos.

  • Garantizar que se mantenga todo el inventario y que los programas tengan los

    suministros y los recursos necesarios para tener éxito.

  • Ayudar a crear y mantener colaboraciones con socios externos.

  • Ayudar con la recaudación de fondos y subvenciones.

     

CALIFICACIONES MÍNIMAS

  • Bachillerato en ciencias biológicas o algún campo relacionado cómo ciencias marinas o ciencias ambientales.

  • Experiencia concreta en el manejo y supervisión de empleados.

  • Excelente habilidad en resolución de problemas.

  • Aptitud clara en organización y gestión de tiempo.

  • Comunicación efectiva y habilidades interpersonales, con la capacidad de trabajar en

    colaboración con un equipo diverso.

  • Capacidad para seguir y dar instrucciones de manera efectiva

  • Habilidad para trabajar en un entorno acelerado y manejar múltiples prioridades.

  • Disponibilidad para trabajar los fines de semanas y horarios fuera de lo común.

  • Dispuesto a trabajar al aire libre, en condiciones climáticas adversas y terreno

    complicado.

  • Ser físicamente capaz de empujar, halar y levantar al menos 50 libras.

  • Licencia de conducir válida y medio de transporte confiable.

     

CALIFICACIONES ADICIONALES PREFERIDAS

  • Un certificado relevante (e.g., Certificado en operación y construcción de instalaciones acuáticas).

  • Conocimiento de la biología, fisiología y acuacultura de corales, erizos y cangrejos.

  • Conocimiento de sistemas de sistemas de soporte vital.

  • Al menos 6 meses de experiencia trabajando con viveros terrestres o sistemas

    cerrados.

  • Al menos 6 meses de experiencia supervisando equipos.

  • Excelente comunicación verbal y escrita en español e inglés.

  • Conocimiento de las regulaciones y estándares ambientales aplicables.

  • Conocimiento de la ecología de arrecifes de coral y/o biología de corales.

     

INFORMACIÓN ADICIONAL

  • CIROM se encuentra en el Departamento de Ciencias Marinas de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Mayagüez

  • Esta posición es por un período limitado a 3 años con posibilidad de extensión basado en fondos disponibles.

  • Se requerirán aproximadamente 40 horas de trabajo cada semana, pero las horas pueden variar según la necesidad.

  • El pago será de $65,000 anualmente con un paquete de beneficios que incluye tiempo libre remunerado (enfermedad y vacaciones), compensación laboral y beneficios de desempleo.
