Mangrove
Nursery
Puerto Rico
Mangroves are vital ecosystems that protect coastlines from erosion, support biodiversity, and act as powerful carbon sinks, sequestering carbon dioxide at rates up to four times greater than terrestrial forests. In Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean, mangroves are increasingly threatened by coastal development, pollution, and sea level rise.
Current Projects
1
Pilot Mangrove Nursery for Ecosystem Restoration and Carbon Dioxide Removal
For this project, ISER Caribe will develop a Mangrove Pilot Nursery at its CIROM facility in Ceiba, Puerto Rico to propagate native mangrove species (Rhizophora mangle) for use in local restoration projects. The nursery will serve as a hub for mangrove propagation, restoration research, community training, and environmental education. This project will also allow us to continue to support blue carbon strategies and community-based carbon dioxide removal initiatives, by having our mangrove nursery serve as an educational platform for students, youth, and local stakeholders and through a series of talks about the importance and benefits of carbon removal.
Funded by Carbon 180, this project will run from 2025 through 2026.
